In this Vocabulary, a set of definitions andassociated terms is given, in English and French,for a system of basic and general concepts used inmetrology, together with concept diagrams todemonstrate their relations. Additional information isgiven in the form of examples and notes undermany definitions.This Vocabulary is meant to be a commonreference for scientists and engineers — includingphysicists, chemists, medical scientists — as wellas for both teachers and practitioners involved inplanning or performing measurements, irrespectiveof the level of measurement uncertainty andirrespective of the field of application. It is alsomeant to be a reference for governmental and intergovernmentalbodies, trade associations, accreditationbodies, regulators, and professional societies.Concepts used in different approaches to describingmeasurement are presented together. The memberorganizations of the JCGM can select the conceptsand definitions in accordance with their respectiveterminologies. Nevertheless, this Vocabulary isintended to promote global harmonization ofterminology used in metrology.
